What should we wear?
Choosing what to wear for your newborn or family photoshoot does not need to feel overwhelming. I always advise clients to wear something that they feel comfortable in. The most beautiful images come from outfits that feel natural and true to you, this allows the focus to remain on connection rather than clothing.
When everyone feels at ease with what they are wearing, it shows in the final images - relaxed, timeless images that you will love for years to come.
Keeping it simple and timeless
Neutral, soft tones photography beautifully in natural light. Shades such as cream, beige, soft grey, muted blues, gentle blush and warm earth tones work effortlessly together and create a calm cohesive look.
Rather than matching exactly aim to coordinate. Choosing a colour palette and mixing textures within allows each family member to feel like themselves while still looking beautifully connected.
Avoid strong logos, bold patterns or very bright colours, as these can draw attention away from the faces and emotion.
What works bet for newborns
For newborns, less really is more. Simple outfits photograph best - a soft wrap or vest keeps the focus on the tiny details and expressions. I always provide a selection of curated wraps and textures that work beautifully when photographed in natural light.
Bare feet and natural textures add to the softness of the images, keeping outfits uncomplicated also means baby stays comfortable and settled throughout the session.
What to wear as parents
For parents comfort is key. Soft fabrics that move easily allow you to relax into the experience - cuddling, holding and connection naturally with your baby.
Mums often feel most relaxed in flowing, soft and relaxed clothing, while dads photograph well in simple shirts, fine knits and neutral trousers. Most importantly choose pieces you feel confident in, it is probably not the occasion to try a brand new outfit you have never worn!
Dressing children and siblings
Children should be able to move, sit and play comfortably. Soft fabrics, neutral colours and simple shapes work best.
Bare feet or simple shoes photograph beautifully and outfits without slogans or cartoon characters keep the images feeling timeless and calm.
Most importantly, let children feel like themselves - comfort always comes before perfection.
If you are ever unsure, I am always happy to help you plan outfits in advance so you can feel relaxed and confident on the day.
