How to prepare for a photoshoot at home.

One of the most common worries I hear from parents when I am booking in a photoshoot in their home is “Our house isn’t ready” or “We don’t know how to prepare”.

The good news is that you don’t need a perfect home, a perfectly settled baby, a perfectly behaved toddler or a perfectly planned day. Lifestyle newborn and family photography is about capturing real moments, just as you are, in the place where your family is most at ease.

Here is a gentle guide to preparing for an at-home photoshoot - with as little pressure as possible.

Do I need to tidy my house for a photoshoot?

Short answer is no, not in the way you might think.

I’m not looking for spotless rooms or styled spaces. A quick declutter of the areas we are likely to use, those with the best natural light, is more that enough. Clearing bedside tables, windowsills and floors helps keeps the focus on you and your baby/family, but there is no need to deep clean or hide signs of real life.

Irish homes are lived-in, cosy and full of character and that is what makes your photos meaningful and unique to you.

Which rooms are best for photos at home?

I usually work in just one or two rooms with the best natural light. This is often, the main bedroom, the main living are with a large window or a kitchen/living area that is bright.

I can guide this on the day, taking into account the light, the time of year and how your home feels. Natural light in Ireland can be soft and changeable, and that is something I try to work with not against.

What time works best for at-home photos (in Ireland)?

Generally mid morning, especially during the darker months or the rainy days. Winter light is softer and lower, while summer brings brighter and longer days, but their is no need to stress about exact timings.
