When is the best time for a newborn photoshoot?
Those first few days with a new baby can feel like a blur -quiet mornings, long nights, bleary eyes and those tiny details that you don’t yet realise you will want to remember forever. One of the questions many parents ask me is when is the best moment to photograph it all. With newborn and lifestyle photography the answer is more flexible than you might expect.
A slower, more natural approach to newborn photography
Unlike traditional posed newborn photography, lifestyle newborn sessions are not built around strict timelines or perfect poses. They’re about capturing your baby as they are, in the rhythm of your own home, surrounded by the people who love them most.
There isn’t a single “perfect” day - instead, there is a window of time that works beautifully for most families.
The early weeks
Many families choose to have their newborn lifestyle session within the first two to three weeks after birth. During this time, babies are often very sleepy and “curled” up, making it a lovely stage for calm intimate photographs. I like for these sessions to feel slow and unhurried - feeding breaks, settling, nappy changes are always part of the experience. There is no expectation for babies to sleep or behave in any particular way.
What if life doesn’t follow a timeline?
One of the most reassuring things about lifestyle, on-location newborn photography is its flexibility. If your baby arrives early, later than expected, or you simply need more time to adapt and adjust, the session can adapt.
Older newborns and babies bring their own kind of magic - open eyes, stretching arms, baby smiles, tiny feet, sitting up and sometimes first steps. These moments are just as special and meaningful to capture.
