What to expect from a family photoshoot ( from start to finish).
If you are thinking about booking a family photoshoot, chances are you are feeling a mixture of excitement and dread! Almost every family I work with tells me that same thing beforehand “I really don’t like getting my photo taken” or “ My kids won’t sit still”.
So I thought I would write this post to put your mind at ease and walk you through exactly what happens during a family photoshoot, from the moment you get in touch with me to the moment you receive your images.
Before the photoshoot
Once you get in touch, we can discuss an outline of what you are looking for, I often suggest if people have specific photographs they would like to let me know in advance and I can be sure to work around that. This isn’t about creating a rigid plan - it’s simply about understanding your family, your children and your expectations.
I can guide you on:
Choosing a location
What to wear
The best time of day depending on your family routine
On the day
There is no need to prepare children to “behave” or practice smiles. The most important thing is that everyone arrives feeling relaxed and unpressured.
We can start slowly, allowing everyone - especially children - time to settle. There is no expectation to preform or pose. Instead, I give gentle direction where needed and let the rest unfold naturally.
Children are always free to move, explore, cuddle and take breaks. Some kids are quiet at first, while others are full of energy - both are completely ok. Real moments only happen when children feel comfortable to be themselves.
Parents often worry that they’ll need to constantly “manage” things, but my role is to observe, adapt and guide - not to expect perfection.
During the shoot
I’ll gently prompt moments rather than pose them. Walking together, sitting close, hugs and even sometimes tickles.
If something doesn't go to plan, we simply move with it. Some of the most meaningful images come from moments that weren’t planned at all. You don’t need to look at the camera or worry what your face is doing, I’ll let you know!
After the photoshoot
Once your session is complete, I carefully select and edit your images in a natural, timeless way, staying true to colour, light and emotion.
You will receive:
a secure online curated gallery
images that reflect how your family as they are right now
moments you may not even remember happening
A final thought
You don’t need a “perfect” family, matching outfits, or perfectly behaved children to have beautiful photographs.
If you are thinking about booking a session and have questions, I am always happy to chat - no pressure or obligation. You can get in touch here.
